You can sync Tags from Spektrix to Custom Data Fields in Dotdigital. Tags which are synced as Data Fields can then be used in Programs and Dynamic Content.

Before syncing Tags to Dotdigital, you should be familiar with:

Why sync Tags to Dotdigital?

When you sync Tags from Spektrix to Dotdigital, you can combine the insights from your CRM data in Spektrix with the powerful marketing tools in Dotdigital to:

  • Trigger and control Programs: for example, sending tailored onboarding journeys, membership journeys or targeted follow-ups based entirely on a customer’s behaviour or status.

  • Power Dynamic Content: allowing a single email to display different messages, offers, images or calls-to-action depending on each customer’s data.

  • Power Liquid Script Logic: allowing you to personalise emails with decisions and loops. You can also combine this with Event data for more targeted messaging.

How does it work?

You can sync a single Tag Group to your Dotdigital account. Your Tag Group can have up to 100 Tags.

To sync a Tag from Spektrix, you’ll need to:

  1. Set up a synced Tag Group in Spektrix

  2. Create the Tag you want to sync within the synced Tag Group (the name of the Tag must be sixteen characters or fewer)

  3. Create a new Custom Data Field in Dotdigital with a matching name

If a Custom Data Field in Dotdigital matches the name of one of the Tags in your Synced Tag Group, then it will be automatically synced with information from Spektrix.

Additionally, to use Tags in Dotdigital Programs, you’ll also need a synced address book

1. Set up a Synced Tag Group

To set up a synced Tag Group:

  1. In Spektrix, create a new Tag Group or choose an existing one. You can find information about how to do this in the Normal Tags and Auto Tags article.

TIP: Whether you’re using a new or existing Tag Group, make sure you choose a clear, descriptive name. For example, “Dotdigital Sync Tags”. You might also want to add a description of “DO NOT DELETE max 16 characters per tag name”. This will visually indicate your synced Tag Group and its restrictions to the rest of your team.

  2. Contact Support and let them know the exact name of the Tag Group you want to sync with Dotdigital.

2. Create a Tag within your Synced Tag Group

Once your Tag Group is synced with Dotdigital, you’ll need to create the Tag(s) you want to sync.

To do this:

  1. Find your Synced Tag Group

  2. Set up your Tag by following the steps in the Normal Tags and Auto Tags article. The name of the Tag must be sixteen characters or fewer

WARNING: If the Tag is more than sixteen characters in length, then it will not sync with Dotdigital. Furthermore, Tags with more than sixteen characters will stop any data from being synced to and from your Dotdigital account.

3. Create a new Custom Data Field

In Dotdigital, navigate to Settings > Contacts > Contact data fields. Then, click into the Custom Data fields tab.

To create a new Custom Data Field, click the New Data Field button:

Complete the details, as required in the form:

  • Name: The new Contact Data Field should match the name of your Tag, but with the prefix TAG_ .

Replace any spaces with underscores _ and enter the Contact Data Field name in UPPERCASE.

For example, if a synced Tag was ‘Comedy Booker’ then the Contact Data Field name would be: TAG_COMEDY_BOOKER

  • Data type: Tags need to be set up as a Yes/No field type.

  • Default Value: Leave this value blank.

  • Access: Always set this to Private.

  • Folder: You can choose to store your Data Field in a folder.

The Tag will then be synced at 7am each day (if you have a synced address book) or when you schedule or send an Integrated Mailing to an included Customer.
