The Saveo BOLT S12D/Z12D is a handheld ticket scanner designed for scanning QR codes and barcodes. The Saveo BOLT adds scanning functionality to any mobile device using Bluetooth or a wired connection. The Saveo BOLT captures the QR code/barcode information and sends this to the Scanning Interface on your mobile device’s web browser.
The Saveo BOLT S12D and Saveo BOLT Z12D are identical in appearance. The process for setting them up is the same. They only differ by their scanning speed:
- The Saveo BOLT S12D scans at 30fps*
- The Saveo BOLT Z12D scans at 60fps*
*fps = Frames per second
In this article we’ll cover the steps to set up the scanner and connect it to a mobile device using Bluetooth or a wired connection.
To set up the Saveo BOLT, you’ll need to scan some barcodes from the Quick Start Guide. We recommend scanning barcodes from the Quick Start Guide included with the scanner. If you need a copy, you can download and print it from this article.
TIP: The barcodes in this article are displayed as a reference to their placement in the Quick Start Guide.
We recommend that you do not scan the barcodes directly from this article when reading on a monitor or mobile device. The scanner may be unable to detect the barcode due to the scanning light reflecting onto the screen.
Which connection should I use?
The Saveo BOLT scanner can be connected using two methods:
- Bluetooth: Suitable for mobile devices. For example, a mobile phone/cellphone, tablet or iPad
- 2.4GHz wireless: Suitable for a wireless PC connection
- Wired Connection: Suitable for a wired connection to an Android device
Initial Setup
Before you can start using your Saveo BOLT, you’ll need to complete some initial setup:
- Set the charge and data cable type
- Charge the scanner before use
Setting the charge and data cable type
When charging the Saveo BOLT in the supplied cradle or when using a wired connection (Android only) to your mobile device, you’ll need to set the cable type. You can choose USB-C or Micro-USB.
TIP: Due to Apple restrictions, you can only charge
your device using the supplied cable. It isn't possible to transmit data
from the scanner using a wired connection.
To transmit data from the scanner to an Apple device, set up a Bluetooth
connection by following the steps in
this article.
To set the cable type, follow these steps:

Power on the BOLT by pulling the trigger. The scanner will beep once.

In the Quick Start Guide, under Getting Started, scan the barcode for the cable you’ll be using to charge/connect to your mobile device:
Apple iOS and iPadOS (Lightning connector)
If you are using an Apple device with a lightning connector, you may need to order a cable kit add-on. This must be purchased as part of the initial ordering process.
The cable kit add-on (SCF003-KIT) includes:
- SCUSBC: 1 x Premium USB Type-C cable
- SCF003: 1 x Flex-Protect Lightning device cable
TIP: For Apple devices with a USB-C connector, use the USB-C to Micro USB flex cable supplied with the Saveo BOLT.
Charging the Saveo BOLT
Once you’ve set your cable type, you can charge your Saveo BOLT by inserting it into the supplied charge cradle.
The charge cradle is designed to use the USB cable and power adapter (if supplied) with your mobile device.
If your mobile device doesn’t come with a USB charger, any standard USB charger supplying 5V at 2.4–3A will work.
Follow these steps:

Plug the charging cable from your mobile device into the port for your cable type:

With the notification LED facing you, insert the scanner into the charge cradle. When inserted correctly, you’ll hear a beep.

Charge the scanner fully. Charging time takes around 1.5 hours.
Connecting to a mobile device using bluetooth
Once you’ve fully charged the Saveo BOLT, you can connect it to your mobile device using Bluetooth.
Make sure you have your Quick Start Guide ready, you’ll need to scan barcodes from the guide as part of the setup.

Pairing with an Android device
Follow these steps to pair with an Android device:

Power on the BOLT by pulling the trigger. The scanner will beep once.

In the Quick Setup Guide, look for Connecting via Bluetooth HID (iOS/Android). Scan both Wireless Bluetooth HID Communication barcodes:

On your device, turn on Bluetooth. Your device will search for available devices within range
-
After a few seconds, you should see the scanner’s serial number BLTXXXXXXXXX under Available devices. Select your scanner to start pairing:

You’ll see a Bluetooth pairing request. Tap Pair:

The Saveo BOLT will show as connected under Other devices:
TIP: When using Bluetooth, the BOLT only needs to be paired once to each mobile device. The devices will attempt to connect whenever the scanner and the mobile device are powered on and in range.
To connect a different mobile device to your Saveo BOLT, unpair the Bluetooth device first.Keyboard settings (Android Bluetooth connections only)
The Saveo BOLT works as a standard keyboard, allowing you to scan QR codes and barcodes into Spektrix without needing any additional software. When you scan a QR code or barcode, the data is sent to Spektrix as if you had typed it in on a keyboard.
When using the scanner with an Android device, the on-screen keyboard will be deactivated. This means you won’t be able to manually enter any barcodes if needed.
Follow these steps if you’d like to enable the onscreen keyboard while using the scanner:

Make sure the Saveo BOLT is powered off.

Access your phone’s settings, search for and select Physical keyboard:

Toggle Use on-screen keyboard to the on position:
TIP: Your phone menus may look different depending on the model of the Android phone you’re using. If you need further help, consult the manufacturers online guides.
Once you’ve paired the Saveo BOLT with your device, you can:
- Access the Scanning Interface to enable Instances for scanning

Pairing with an Apple device
Follow these steps to pair with an Apple device:

Power on the BOLT by pulling the trigger. The scanner will beep once.

In the Quick Setup Guide, look for Connecting via Bluetooth HID (iOS/Android). Scan both Wireless Bluetooth HID Communication barcodes:

On your device, turn on Bluetooth. Your device will search for available devices within range

Using a wired connection (Android devices only)
To connect the Saveo BOLT to your Android or Apple USB-C device using a wired connection, you’ll need the appropriate flex cable for your device:
- Micro USB to USB-C
- Micro USB to Micro USB
TIP: We recommend only using a
Bluetooth connection
with Apple devices.
Due to Apple restrictions, the on-screen keyboard is
deactivated when using a wired connection. This means you won't be able
to
manually enter barcodes into the Scanning Interface if the QR code/barcode
is not recognised.
Bluetooth is the preferred connection method for both Android and Apple
devices.
Follow these steps:

Plug the Micro USB end of the flex cable into the top of the Saveo BOLT:

Plug the other end of the flex cable into your Android device.
-
Power on the BOLT by pulling the trigger. The scanner will beep once.

Scan the barcode under Connecting via wired USB HID (Android devices) in the Quick Start Guide:

You’ll see a message or an A symbol at the top of your device screen. This means the Saveo BOLT is set as an external keyboard:

Once you’ve connected the Saveo BOLT to your mobile device, you can:

Unpairing from a mobile device (Bluetooth only)
If you need to unpair the Saveo BOLT from a mobile device, for example to connect to another mobile device, follow the steps below. Click on the tab below on whether you’re using an Android or Apple device.

Unpairing from an Android device
To unpair your Saveo BOLT, follow these steps:

Access your device’s Bluetooth settings.

In the list of devices, tap your scanner BLTXXXXXXXXX to bring up the device details:

In Device details, tap Forget:

In the Forget device? pop up, tap FORGET DEVICE:
To pair the scanner to another mobile device, follow the steps in Connecting to a mobile device using bluetooth.

Unpairing from an Apple device
To unpair your Saveo BOLT, follow these steps:

Access your phone’s bluetooth settings

Tap ⓘ next to BLTXXXXXXXXX:

Tap Forget This Device:

Tap Forget Device to confirm.

Configuring additional settings
When using the Saveo BOLT scanner, you can configure additional settings:
All other settings should remain unchanged.

If you try to scan a barcode directly from this article when reading on a monitor
or mobile device, the scanner may be unable to detect the barcode. This is due
to the scanning light reflecting onto the screen.
Sound
You can change the volume of the beep when you scan a ticket with the Saveo BOLT. Scan the appropriate barcode from the Sound Settings section of the Quick Start Guide.
You can choose from:
- High volume
- Low volume
- Mute
Sleep Mode/Standby time
To preserve battery life, you can change the amount of time before the Saveo BOLT scanner goes into sleep/standby mode. Scan the appropriate barcode from the Power Management section of the Quick Start Guide.
You can choose from:
- Standby/Sleep Immediately
- 1 Min (default)
- 5 Mins
- 10 Mins
- 30 Mins
- Never
